The Classica 1 has a very firm foam on both sides of the crib mattress. Both mattress sides are identical. The Classica 3 has one very firm side for newborns and a softer side for toddlers. It is very important to have a rock hard very firm mattress for newborns to help to prevent SIDS. The softer backside of the Classica 3 is for toddlers for a more comfortable sleep. This slightly softer side will conform more to the toddlers body shape and weight creating more support and less pressure points allowing for a more comfortable sleep.
